Managing Symptomatic EndometriosisSymposium held at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado, on Monday, October 25, 2010. Supported by an independent educational grant from Abbott Laboratories. Chronic, debilitating pelvic pain and infertility are the most common symptoms of endometriosis. Research on the disorder’s hormonal, inflammatory, and angiogenic mechanisms has provided greater understanding of its etiology, as well as more targeted treatment strategies. Linda C. Giudice, MD, PhD, MSc, details the pathophysiologic mechanisms of endometriosis and provides an overview of current treatment modalities. Eric Surrey, MD, discusses surgical treatment, medical therapy, and the combination of surgery and postoperative medical treatment for women with endometriosis. Marc R. Laufer, MD, examines the particular challenges of managing endometriosis in the adolescent patient. Following the presentations, Dr Giudice fields questions for the faculty from symposium attendees.
