1.0 CME/CE Credits

Symposium held November 2008 at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California. Supported by an independent educational grant from Merck and Co., Inc.

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Clinicians have increasingly mastered knowledge of the natural history of human papillomavirus (HPV) in its association with cervical cancer, but generally remain less aware of the association of this virus in the etiology of many of the vaginal, vulvar, penile, anal, and oral pharyngeal cancers that occur in the US every year. In order address this knowledge gap this symposium is designed to provide a broad overview of all benign and malignant manifestations that occur secondary to infection with low- and high-risk HPV, and to discuss primary prevention through HPV vaccination.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this symposium, attendees will be able to:

1) Describe the mechanism of HPV-induced oncogenesis and the data to date on the prevention of cervical precancer (CIN3 and AIS) though HPV vaccination.
2) Discuss the burden of HPV associated cancers of the penis, anus and oral pharynx (including respiratory papillomatosis) and the data on primary prevention by HPV vaccination of HPV infection and precancer in these areas.
3) Describe the burden of HPV associated benign genital warts, vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN), vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VAIN) and cancers of the vulva and vagina and the data on primary prevention by HPV vaccination.
